Definition: Open educational resources (OERs) are teaching, learning, and research materials in any medium that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access use, adaptation, and redistribution by others (Educause). Global efforts to move to OER options have increased.

Charge of IU OER Advisory Group
The OER Advisory Group is charged by the ALC to:
- Advise IU’s representative to the Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC) Summit Action Team on OER on the following issues:
- Understanding the scope and nature of OERs in general and within Indiana;
- State coordination and action plan (analyses of statuses of OER within Indiana and other states, devise plans for increase; create plans for coordination and action strategies);
- Follow-up networking (regular calls among teams, webinars, and implementation); and
- Support and facilitate an IU strategy for developing and using OERs, including information, policy, practice, and procedures surrounding OERs.
The OER Advisory Group is convened by the Assistant Vice President for University Academic Policy, and is comprised of Library Deans or Directors of each IU campus, or their designee. It meets twice per year (April and September).
